Listen to "Is Mexico Helping China Evade U.S. Tariffs? with Alejandro Martinez Azaira - Sarah Westall" on Spreaker.
Alejandro Martinez Araiza, National General Secretary of the National Food and Commerce Union (SNAC), Mexico's oldest private-sector labor union, joins the program for a candid discussion about trade, agriculture, labor, and the increasingly consequential relationship between Mexico and the United States.Araiza recently testified during the USMCA review process before representatives of the U.S. Trade Representative and the Departments of State, Treasury, and Labor. He argues that the administration's allegations that Mexico is working with China to circumvent agricultural and food tariffs are largely unfounded. We also examine the growing fertilizer crisis, the vulnerabilities it creates throughout the global food supply, and how food and trade have repeatedly been weaponized to exert economic and political control. Araiza explains how modern-day slavery and exploitation within agriculture could be confronted through coordinated U.S.-Mexico policies centered on human dignity and higher-paying jobs. He believes these policies could reduce immigration pressures, strengthen both countries, and substantially improve their relationship. This is a timely, unfiltered conversation that strips away the political framing surrounding issues rarely examined with this level of openness. A must-hear discussion. You can learn more at snac.mx.Sign up for the Newsletter and see exclusives now located at WestallMedia.com or still at SarahWestall.substack.com.
